Movers and Shakers

The big day has arrived. And with packing tape and teetering cardboard boxes taking over the indoor domain, it's time to take on the challenge of getting your fridge ready for moving out.

Appliances can be quite the challenge to shift to a new home. Not only cumbersome, they require cleaning, securing and worst of all, lifting. But first things first, it's time to get the contents gone.

Give away perishables and pack up items that you're going to take with you. Remember, if you're moving a long distance, leave refrigerated items behind. Remove all magnets, whiteboards and drawings as well as additional items on top of the fridge.

Once unplugged, it can take up to eight hours for the refrigerator to defrost, depending on the amount built-up in the freezer. It's best to defrost it overnight, and then wipe out the insides the following day.

Remove all shelves and other loose items. If you prefer, tape the fridge drawers closed, be careful that the tape you choose won't leave a mark, or remove them. Wrap the shelves with moving blankets, towels or plain paper to protect them during the move. Label the shelves accordingly.

Unplug and wrap the cord, securing it so it doesn't get caught while moving. With a strong cord or rope, tie the doors closed by wrapping the cord around the fridge. If you have a double door, tie the doors together. Tape works as well, but just remember that when you remove the tape the paint surface may come with it.

Now that your fridge is fit to move, be sure to use the right equipment handy, such as a dolly and a ramp for negotiating stairs. in mind that a dirty floor is a damaged floor in waiting. Dirt and grit under the foot of an appliance can tear vinyl.

It's a good idea to mop the floor and when it's dry lay down a piece hardboard or Masonite, shiny side up. Lift or lever the appliance and lower it onto the hardboard, then gently coax the appliance forward. Given that a half-sheet costs only $10, it's inexpensive insurance.
