Four Tell-Tale Signs Your Refrigerator May Be Dying

Refrigerators don’t seem to have the long lifespans they used to. When one stops working, it can be a huge financial burden and overall, a pain in the butt (just imagine yourself scrambling to think of where to move all of your food items before they go bad!) No one needs that kind of stress!
The following tips can help you decide if it is time to replace that fridge, or just opt for minor and cost-effective repairs:

-          A leading cause in refrigerator problems is a bad seal on the door. The seal, also known as the gasket system, prevents cold air from leaving the fridge and warm air from entering it. A telltale sign of a busted seal is the accumulation of droplets of water around the refrigerator door. If you see this, you should take action to repair the seal right away as it could lead to bigger problems in the future, such as the compressor motor burning out.

-          Old refrigerators are notorious for their inefficiency and over-consumption of energy. Look at your energy bill- are your monthly costs rising steadily and you aren’t sure why? Does your fridge have to work harder to keep up? You may be saving yourself a fortune in monthly energy costs alone by replacing it with a newer, more efficient appliance.

-          If your refrigerator is producing an unusual amount of heat, this is a sure-fire sign that something is wrong. Often what happens is the condenser coils on the appliance’s back or bottom overheat due to an accumulation of dust. This may result in your motor having to work extra hard- and possibly burn out. A simple way to prevent this from happening is to frequently dust the condenser coils.

-          You know you have a problem on your hands when the compressor motor does not shut off. When this occurs, you can be sure either the refrigerator’s thermostat or the motor are not working properly. Replacing motors are more costly and difficult than replacing a thermostat, so depending on what the problem is, it may be time to get a new appliance.

Further, you can tell if something is up if food items in your refrigerator seem to be going bad, even before their expiry date. This leads to lots of annual waste in food, and possible health risks too if the problem is not managed properly.
