When Your Freezer is Making a Strange Sound

Your freezer started making a loud noise like a knocking at the door? Usually, freezer noises are not so strange and even frequent. We can hear sounds such as clicking, bubbling, gurgling and knocking. They are common and may not even be a serious problems. Yet, not all sounds are produced equal and some of them might be a sign of serious breaking.  The following are common freezer noises:

Banging.
Probable sources of problems: compressor or condenser motor, evaporator fan. Loud banging sound coming from a freezer usually means broken components in the motor.

Humming.
Possible causes: start relay or compressor. Your freezer is not getting cold and there’s a clicking sound? Check the start relay which is attached on the side of the compressor. The starter relay runs power to the compressor. When part is not working, it can easily be replaced. When the humming is coming from the compressor (motor that compresses the refrigerant and circulates it through the evaporator and condenser coils), then it may be defective and will have to be replaced.

Knocking or bubbling.
Potential causes: the refrigerant is clogged, not circulating and water running down the drain draining during defrost cycles. These sounds are normal and there is nothing to worry about. Gurgling noise coming from the freezer is generally the sound of water or refrigerant draining in the drain line.

Dripping.
Probable explanation: defrost cycle. No freezers drip when defrosting is they are frosted as they should. Usually, dripping sounds are normal.
