Common Tips on How to Maintain Your Refrigerator

A refrigerator is the most essential appliance in a home. It runs 24/7, and we rely on it to always work at 100%. The day it stops working or doesn’t keep our food as cold as it should, we have to remediate to the situation right away and fix it. However, regular maintenance and proper care of your refrigerator will keep it last a lot longer and can possibly make you save lots of money on your electricity bills and on repairs. A refrigerator well maintained will without a doubt use less energy and have a longer lifespan. Here are 6 common tips you can use if you want to keep your refrigerator running for a lot longer.

  1. Check The Condenser Coils and The Fan
Food particles and dust build up in the condenser coils and fan over time and will make the unit to work harder and use more energy. Using more energy automatically results in being more expensive to run and in higher energy bills. A regular cleaning (at least every 6 months) is required. The best way to clean the dust out of the coils and the fan is to use a vacuum. They are located in the back or the bottom of the refrigerator.

  2. Check If The Unit Is Level
Look at the floor and check that your refrigerator unit is level. The most efficient way to ensure that the floor is level is to use a carpenter’s level and put it on top of the refrigerator. If it’s not level, the feet under the fridge are easily adjustable. On the long term, when the unit is on an unlevel surface, it will cause the doors not to close tightly.

  3. Check the Door Seal
The door seal is also known as door gasket. It’s the seal around the refrigerator and freezer doors that keeps the cold air inside. If the gasket is cracked, then air escapes and the refrigerator works harder. It causes bigger electricity bills.

  4. Check the Drain and the Drip Pan
The drain hole and drip pan have to be emptied regularly from water and food particles. They are the parts that remove the excess amount of water generated by condensation. Steady maintenance will prevent clogging.

  5. Check The Water Filter
You should replace the water filter every 6 months. Dust and calcium can accumulate and that’s why we recommend you to change it regularly

  6. Check the Temperature Settings
For better results, maintain the temperature of your refrigerator between 36 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Keeping the appliance at the right temperature will optimize the energy usage.
