Common Refrigerator Problems

Your fridge is the most used appliance in your home… because running 24/7. Though refrigerators are meant to last, they can leak or actually work too hard because they are not maintained regularly. Sometimes a freezer stops making ice or even worse or building a snow home. These are some quick actions you can perform to fix common refrigerator problems and to help maintaining your most-used appliance working at its best performance.

The Frostless Freezer
If you freezer is presenting a build up of ice and snow, the problem is with no doubt that the freezer door gasket is damaged and lets leaking the cold air. Therefore, with warm air coming in, it is forcing the freezer so it makes extra chills in the freezer and causing the ‘igloo effect.’

Check the gasket or freezer seal by putting a flashlight or battery-powered light inside the freezer with the light pointed directionally to the door. You can’t use an electric power cord to power the light or the door won’t close anyway. Once the light is on, (and this works better at night or in a dark kitchen), turn the light off in the kitchen and see if you can spot light coming from inside the freezer around the perimeter of the door. If you do, don’t worry, its pretty easy to get a new gasket and to replace the old one.

Ice Maker Not Making Ice?
This is no fun, especially since it Murphy’s Law dictates that it will likely happen the day before you’re hosting a party. No worries. If you can’t get it fixed, call us to help you but typically it can be caused by a couple a little problem that’s easy to fix. First, check to make sure that the ice maker was not accidently turned off. Sometimes when you put food in and out of the freezer, or when you get ice, you raise the little lever. Be sure its lowered and your icemaker appliance will need no more repair! Sometimes there isn’t a little lever and you need to lower a little wire bar. You can check for that too. If you still can’t get us, call us and we’ll send someone right away.

You Fridge Sounds Like its Constantly Running in Over Drive?
This problem is typically caused because the condenser coils underneath the refridgerator (located right in front a typically removable piece that is the width of the fridge at the front and bottom of the fridge), are both a dispenser of heat and a magnet for dust – especially if you have pets or a lot of foot traffic. It’s a good idea to regularly remove the plastic and vacuum the cools. You can avoid having to do this too often if you actually get a piece of pantyhose and make a kind of filter that will block the dust and pet hair from resting directly on the coils! Try that and if you need help or more, give us a call and we’ll send an appliance repair specialist right to your door.
